I’m Izzy and I am a final-year undergraduate English student at the University of Liverpool. I started volunteering with Action Tutoring about a year ago. During a careers meeting at my university, in which I had expressed my interest in a career in teaching, Action Tutoring was recommended as a way to boost my application forms. I didn’t know much about them - in fact I had never heard of the organisation - but I went online and looked at their website.
I was interested in volunteering straight away. Action Tutoring’s aim to support pupils achieve academically, who may have disadvantaged backgrounds, is inspirational and something I wanted to be a part of. I thought this would give me a real insight into the challenges I may face as a teacher.

Soon after making my application, I was accepted and began my training. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and I talked to people I would never have otherwise met. I was quite nervous for the first session with my pupil, but there was really no need to be. Planning an hour session may seem daunting at first, but once I got to know my first pupil, Renée, it was easier to understand what she wanted to work on more and what work suited her better. I like to think by the end of the academic year she had enjoyed the sessions as much as I enjoyed delivering them, and I signed up for a new term with a new pupil.  It is so rewarding to help a pupil improve in a subject that they struggle with, and even better when they begin to enjoy that subject!

After the first month of tutoring I applied to Teach First. Action Tutoring and Teach First share a similar goal: to end educational inequality. I therefore had relevant experience which helped me to write a solid application form and feel prepared for the Assessment Centre. I am now all set to start the Leadership Development Programme with Teach First in September 2017 and commence my teaching career.
I really don’t think I would be at this stage if it wasn’t for Action Tutoring – thank you!
