On 18th April 2018 Action Tutoring was thrilled to welcome local MP Karin Smyth to one of our partner schools, Oasis Connaught, in Knowle West, south Bristol.
Action Tutoring has been supporting year 6 pupils at the school in both English and maths since 2016. Every Wednesday, a dedicated team of volunteers enter the school to further help pupils in the build-up to their SATs and it was a pleasure to have Karin see the tutoring in action. Following her visit to the school, Karin said: “I was delighted to see first-hand the work which Action Tutoring are doing in south Bristol and the enthusiasm of local young people. We know that this is an area of high deprivation and it’s why I’ve campaigned so hard for more opportunities here. It’s great to see that Action Tutoring share my commitment to improving outcomes for local young people.”
As Karin mentions, south Bristol is an area of high deprivation and is always in need of more support from volunteers. Karin was able to produce a short video for us explaining the need for volunteers in her constituencies and how to apply to support pupils in the area with their education.
During her visit, Karin was able to speak to some of the pupils and volunteers about their experience with Action Tutoring and the impact it has had on each of them. For some, this was discussing what they were learning about in the sessions, and for others, it was speaking to Karin about how they could use the maths or English they had worked on with their tutors in their everyday life.
It was also a chance for us to reflect on the time our volunteers give each week and to remember how appreciative we are of their commitment to our mission. The charity worked with over 100 volunteers last year from all walks of life, including university students, corporates and retired individuals. We are continually inspired by the time that each and every volunteer can give to the pupils in the schools we are partnered with.
George Fraser, Principal of Oasis Academy Connaught was very positive about the work of the volunteers and the support Action Tutoring provides to the school: “Oasis Academy Connaught has worked with Action Tutoring over the past two years and they have been a fantastic addition to our school community. At the Academy we aim to provide exceptional education for our children, giving them the opportunities that they need to make great progress. The tutors not only support our children academically, but also provide positive role models from the university which helps to raise our young people’s aspirations. We are also very grateful to Karin Smyth MP for taking time out of her busy schedule to visit with the children today.”
It was great to show Karin the impact Action Tutoring has on the school and the dedication and passion our volunteers show each session with their pupils.
