Whilst studying Psychology at Sheffield University, Jess also worked in the Student Union Volunteering Hub where she helped recruit student volunteers and match them with placements. She also volunteered herself as a weekly reading buddy in a local primary school and it was during this time that she became interested in education and the positive impact volunteering can play in raising attainment and helping children overcome barriers to learning.
After graduating she went on to complete a PGCE in Primary Education and taught at inner city primary schools in both London and Bristol. Alongside teaching, she also spent a summer volunteering in a rural primary school in Malawi and ran 1:1 tutoring sessions for primary pupils. In all these all these experiences, Jess was lucky enough to see first hand the positive impact that tutoring has on both children’s achievement and their confidence as learners.
Jess joined Action Tutoring in January 2018, as Programme Coordinator for Bristol and then transitioned to become the English Primary Curriculum Consultant.
