Joshua Smith

Josh joined Action Tutoring in September 2023 as a Programme Coordinator for Newcastle.

Josh is responsible for overseeing a caseload of partner schools in Newcastle, liaising and working closely with the schools and pupils as well as managing our pool of volunteer tutors.

The culture of collaboration and genuine drive of everyone in the charity to see young people succeed is simply unbeatable. There’s a real sense of unity and purpose that is infectious and motivates me to do the best I can.

Action Tutoring’s message and ethos of believing in the unlimited potential of each and every student is something that really spoke to me. Having worked in teaching for 3 years before Action Tutoring with Teach First, I was very keen to continue my career doing something in education with disadvantaged pupils, but was outside the traditional classroom.

As a Programme Coordinator, I absolutely love the variety of the role and being that fulcrum between tutors, teachers, and most importantly, the pupils themselves. Getting to see those real ‘lightbulb moments’ when a pupil finally understands something they’ve struggled with never gets old!

I’m really excited about our plans to expand into rural locations and bridge the attainment gap in even more remote and under-served communities who deserve, and need, our help.
