Ruth joined Action Tutoring in August 2019 as the Birmingham Programme Coordinator. She is a recent psychology graduate from Birmingham City University, where she also volunteered with Action Tutoring.
As both a volunteer for two years, Ruth was able to observe how socio-economic disadvantage can have a lasting effect on students and their ability to succeed. For her dissertation, Ruth investigated how the lack of access to learning opportunities affects achievement. As a tutor, Ruth saw how sessions greatly impacted pupils both in confidence and achievement. These experiences taught Ruth the importance of opportunity and emphasised the lack of opportunity for disadvantaged pupils
Joining Action Tutoring as an employee has given Ruth a wider platform to help pupils succeed in spite of their circumstance. Ruth is excited for the new experiences to come!
