Dylan, pupil in Bristol

Dylan lives in Bristol and is currently studying for A-levels at St. Bede’s Catholic College.

Prior to his post-16 education, Dylan struggled with understanding maths during secondary school at St. Bede’s Catholic School, and he was considered unlikely to meet the expected standard in his GCSE maths. Dylan was enrolled in our online tutoring programme for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years.

Here’s what Dylan had to say about his experience:

Before I started my tutoring sessions, I dreaded [maths] because I didn’t enjoy them. But my tutoring sessions were amazing and really helped boost my confidence in maths.

My tutoring sessions were virtual. I found that really beneficial because it allowed me to talk with someone and build a connection. That’s just the type of learner I am. If I had any questions, I could just ask them and it wouldn’t feel embarrassing because my tutors are not right in front of me.

I think tutoring is important for pupils struggling with subjects. I felt a bit embarrassed to ask questions that my peers in class may have thought were easy. I feel like it’s beneficial for such students and those who want to do well and aren’t getting it in class.

It’s important to go for the tutoring sessions, especially because the tutor understands you. Perhaps you’d like to get to know each other, whether that’s virtually or in person, so that the tutor can understand who you are. If you are given the opportunity to receive tutoring, do it because you won’t regret it.
