Ian, engineer at OPC and volunteer tutor

When I finished university, I thought about becoming a teacher, but instead went into engineering. As I approached my 60th birthday my daughter told me about Action Tutoring. As I’ve always been keen on helping out young people with maths, Action Tutoring was perfect me as I transition out of paid work.

Each year the new pupils arrive with some anxiety and possibly not convinced of the value of the tuition. Gaining their trust and buy in to the tuition is vital and hard to win. Usually, I feel that I have managed to achieve this after some weeks. That moment is memorable each time, as it marks the start of a productive time of learning together.

There are sessions on school days and at times at the beginning and end of the day. This means that it should be possible to find a programme to suit. Participating in a single session requires an hour or so of preparation, an hour in class and travel time. So not too much time, especially if you cycle as I do. Volunteering for one session does not take up too much time. It is a rewarding use of your time and will enhance the enjoyment of your other activities.

I have learned (even more) the value of patience and empathy and that everybody is different but equally important. These are good lessons to take into everyday life. It is inspiring to see the care and attention given to each pupil by the teachers. Equally, the support the pupils give each other is very evident. This model of (in general) cooperation and support is a good one to take into everyday life and I think it has positively affected my attitudes and behaviour.

I have gained a lot of personal satisfaction from interacting with and helping the pupils to learn. It is inspiring to meet young people, 50 years after I was a young person!

If you can spare an hour a week for 30 weeks of the year, seriously consider volunteering with Action Tutoring. If you come with an open mind and listen to the needs of the young people, you will be able to help them, even if you do not have prior teaching experience. There is plenty of support and you will quickly get better at listening and teaching.

To anyone considering volunteering – just do it! Believe in yourself and the young people that you will be lucky enough to meet and help.
