Pupils share how Action Tutoring helped them get their GCSE grades

In September, we held an evening at St Gabriel's College in Camberwell to launch the Action Tutoring programme for this year. Several pupils from last year who had taken part in the programme came back to share their success stories and tell this year's pupils why they should take part. Here's what they had to say!

Shanara Thomas
"My experience of Action Tutoring was really good. I’m not going to lie, when I first started I used to run away and didn’t want to go. Then as time went on and I could see I was on an E3 grade I realized I wasn’t going to get into college and would have to re-take my maths and that’s just boring and a waste of time. Then I thought I have to go! I worked with my tutor and I found it very helpful. The tutor took her time with me and we went over my weak areas and I could bring my own work.

I think everyone should go even if they don’t find it interesting at the beginning. You might not like maths but you don’t want to have to do it again later on. By the time I got to January I realized I could pass maths and then I started going every week. I even worked on some A* topics with my tutor and when it came to the exam I could do them and this helped me pick up extra marks to get a C.  I think other pupils should go and stick with it even if you don’t like it to start with, because it is really helpful. Just go because it does help!”

“I got a U in Year 10 and I got a C in the end thanks to the help of Action Tutoring and the whole of the maths department. I didn’t want to go at the beginning but the maths department persuaded me to go and it was really helpful and I got my grade and now I don’t have to re-take my maths. Everyone’s willing to help you and push you to get your grade. Go to Action Tutoring and you’ll get your grades!”

"I came from a low D to get a B grade and I want to tell others that whether you like maths or not, you should go to Action Tutoring, because you don’t want to have to do it again in college! Maths tutors are coming to help you but you need to put in the time, because at the end of the day you’re the one sitting the exam! I’m really happy with what I got, because I put in time and effort and asked my maths tutor for help. Sometimes I didn’t like asking my teachers for help but it was easy to ask the tutor for help by myself and they would explain things to me.”
