Joshua, Year 6 pupil in Dorset
Joshua has become more confident with maths and looks forward to maths lessons now, in a way that he did not before the tutoring took place. It has been a valuable tool in terms of pre-teaching maths topics and for reinforcement and embedding of learning. At the beginning of the year he was afraid to be challenged with more difficult questions and now he asks to be challenged – demonstrating the building of a growth mindset in Joshua.
I think I do have to say, other than lunchtime and break time, I think Action Tutoring has been the best bit of Year 6. I’m sorry, Year 6 teachers, it’s just Action Tutoring is so fun.
My tutor is kind, he teaches me stuff, and the best thing about him is, if I get something wrong, and if I don’t get something, he will spend his time to help me get it right. He won’t say, “okay, this is how you do it, go do it now”, he will teach you how to do it, like, step by step.
There’s a lot of helpful things my tutor has taught me, but the top two he’s taught me is fractions, adding and subtracting and typing and dividing. And learning what perseverance is – never give up!
So my message to Year 5s is, never give up on what you do, cause even if you get it wrong, your best, is the best. And message to my tutor – you’re great.
