Targeted maths tutoring for your secondary pupils

Boost attainment and help disadvantaged pupils pass their maths GCSEs and SATs, with Action Tutoring’s low-cost, impactful secondary maths programme.

Award-winning assurance: As the National Tutoring Awards’ ‘School Partnership Provider of the Year, our tutoring programmes are structured to seamlessly integrate with your school.

We’re committed to closing the attainment gap in maths

As a charity, we fundraise to subsidise a large portion of the cost of a programme to reduce the impact on tight school budgets. Our programmes are heavily subsidised to help us ensure they can be accessed by the pupils that need them the most.

Addressing the challenge of maths attainment

For many secondary schools, ensuring all pupils achieve strong outcomes in maths is a significant challenge. Particularly for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, gaps in foundational knowledge can hinder progress and impact exam results.

Action Tutoring provides a proven solution. Our structured, curriculum-aligned maths programme is designed to address these challenges, focusing on building confidence, improving understanding, and ultimately, driving attainment.

In 2025, disadvantaged pupils attending 10 or more sessions increased their chances of passing GCSE maths by 13%, in comparison to the national pass rate.

If you’re from a state-maintained secondary school with at least 18% of pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium, you could be eligible to access our maths tuition at a substantially reduced cost.

Class alignment and exceptional understanding

Action Tutoring’s programme aligns very well with our school’s curriculum and in-class teaching goals. The charity takes the time to get to know the school, the needs of the children and our priorities. Coupled with their exceptional understanding of the curriculum and child development, children excel under their care.

Adaptability and tailoring

What I particularly value about Action Tutoring is their adaptability and responsiveness. For example, the maths resources were tailored to better align with our teaching methods, and I was included in discussions about how the charity tracks pupil progress through baseline and progress assessments. Their commitment makes a real difference in the academic development of our pupils.

How our programme works

  1. Identifying pupils:

Schools identify pupils who would benefit most from additional support in maths. Pupils selected should be eligible for Pupil Premium funding or not otherwise have access to private tutoring.

  1. Tailored tutoring sessions:

We provide volunteer tutors who are trained to deliver structured tutoring sessions in maths. These sessions are delivered either in-person at the school or online, in small groups of 2-3.

  1. Regular progress monitoring:

Action Tutoring works with schools to track pupils’ progress throughout the programme. Regular assessments and feedback ensure that tutoring sessions are responsive to pupils’ evolving needs.

  1. Curriculum alignment:

Our tutoring sessions are aligned with the national curriculum, ensuring that pupils receive support that directly complements what they are learning in class. Our sessions are focused on high-scoring topics in exams.

Key benefits include flexible delivery, comprehensive reporting and a dedicated programme coordinator, ensuring minimal additional workload for your schools. You can read more about how our programmes work in more detail here.

Supporting pupils in Year 7

Our resources are designed as a catch up programme for pupils who were still working towards standard at the end of key stage 2. A focus on key areas like numbers, calculations and proportion fills the gaps to help ensure they can be confident with key stage 3 material.

The materials are aimed at pupils who struggle with high-scoring, multiple-step exam questions, using the ‘chunking technique’ and focusing on how language links to calculations.

Supporting pupils in Year 10 and Year 11

Our key stage 4 resources contain 52 key topics that can be chosen based off our baseline assessments or the school’s own gap analysis, focusing on foundation and crossover topics.

Within the skill based workbook we have ‘purposeful practice’, which specifically looks at pupils making connections and being efficient with the methods they use. These ‘same surface, different depth’ activities help pupils with worded questions, supporting them to move off autopilot and become more analytical.
