Alex, Year 6 reading pupil
Meet Alex, a Year 6 pupil at Millbank Primary Academy in London, who began our primary reading programme at the start of term. We caught up with Alex and his tutor in their final session before the winter break to see first-hand how this dedicated support is already transforming his relationship with reading.
How did you feel about reading before you started your tutoring?
‘Actually not really good at it, but when I’m doing the tutoring, I feel better at it. They’re teaching me stuff that I didn’t know before I’d been tutoring.’
How has tutoring helped to improve your reading skills?
‘It’s easier in tutoring because there’s less people and I can concentrate more, but in my class there’s more people – it’s just a bit harder to concentrate and there’s everyone talking.’
Could you give me a few words to describe your tutor?
‘She’s kind and also like she helps us a lot if we’re struggling.’
Can you think of anything in recent weeks or this time that she’s particularly helped you with?
‘How to answer questions more regularly and also how to find evidence in the text.’
Has tutoring made you feel more confident in class?
‘Actually, kind of, yeah. It’s because I put my hand up more regularly to answer questions which are on the board.’
If you could say anything to your tutor right now, what would you say?
‘I’ll say thank you for teaching me and helping me get better in class.’
