Brenda joined Action Tutoring in November 2020 as Programme Coordinator for Newcastle.
Brenda was born and schooled in Newcastle upon Tyne, but has always enjoyed the wide-open spaces of local rural areas and this is where I developed a passion for the outdoors and landscapes.
After university, Brenda worked in Sydney, then, on returning to the UK, embarked on teacher training, which led her to a job in Mombasa, Kenya. A couple of years later, Brenda moved to semi-arid Botswana, where she spent six years in a government school. Here, she was inspired by students and staff who knew that education was their way out of poverty.
When Brenda moved to a school in the capital, Gaborone, she travelled extensively during school holidays seeing much of South Africa and Zimbabwe where political upheaval brought economic downfall and social unrest. When I joined the school leadership team, it was to work with a number of local and international charities, gaining much of my management experience running community service programmes for students and staff.
On returning to her native Newcastle, Brenda worked in secondary schools, marked for exam boards, invigilated for the Open University and taught in FE before taking the decision to work for a charity.
Brenda’s interests are varied and include education, geography, geology, environment, transport, logistics, training, field work, equine and local history.
