Volunteer as an online tutor
Looking for online classroom experience? Our online programme is the perfect option for those with busy schedules or who are not based near our school locations.
Volunteer with Action Tutoring from the comfort of your own home, or anywhere in England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
Express your interest
Transitioning to online volunteering can feel like a leap, but at Action Tutoring, you’re supported every step of the way. From our user-friendly platform to our dedicated Programme Coordinators who are present in every session to handle the “tech,” we ensure you can focus entirely on what matters most: tutoring your pupils.
Initially, I wondered whether online tutoring would feel less personal than face-to-face sessions, and whether managing the technology while teaching maths might be challenging.
However, those concerns disappeared very quickly. The online platform is intuitive and reliable, and the training and support provided by Action Tutoring made the transition straightforward. The digital whiteboard and structured lesson materials work very well for maths tutoring.
As an online tutor, the support of the coordinators and the tech team are invaluable – and always available. Post-session debriefs and ongoing training modules enable tutors to get together and get to know each other. There is always someone who has dealt with issues before, to offer advice etc.
I’ve been able to see a variety of pupils from different schools all across England and gain a better understanding of the mind of a child, and how absorbent they are!
The workbooks are easy to find on the platform. They are very comprehensive giving you everything you need to facilitate a session.
How does it work?

Effortless connection: Pupils are set up on computers in their classrooms, connecting instantly with you through our secure Virtual Classroom via video link.

Ready-to-go resources: Our tutor workbooks are pre-loaded onto the online platform. You and your pupils can simply work through them together.
We support you every step of the way
Before your first session, we provide:
- An “online training” module to walk you through the platform’s features.
- A practice room where you can play with the tools and get comfortable before you meet your pupils.
- In-session support: An Action Tutoring Programme Coordinator or school teacher is present in every online session to help with any technical hiccups or pupil management.
Helpful hints for tutoring online
Here are a few tips to make your online tutoring easy and effective:
Quick tech check: Before your first session, run a simple browser test to ensure your connection, webcam, and microphone are working perfectly.
Engage and re-engage: If a pupil seems distracted, try a short break with a quick brain teaser or chat to re-engage them. Praise and encouragement go a long way!
Clear communication: Since pupils can’t read body language as easily online, use their names frequently to direct questions and activities. Our Virtual Classroom’s single-speaker function also helps manage conversations effortlessly.
Instant tech support: If you or your pupils encounter any tech issues, simply alert your Programme Coordinator. They, or our dedicated online support team, are on hand to resolve it for you as quickly as possible.
